My group of 3 had an 8 night trip this past summer with Harlan and his group. We began our trip The day after Harlan and his team had to relocate several groups because of fire closers. Our trip itinerary changed due to fire closures, but that didn’t matter to us. Harlan set us up with the maps and we were off. One of the things I think you seek on trips like this is obstacles, problems, issues. In most of our everyday lives we have an entire city of people to assist us in solving problems. Not so on a trip like this. And our group faced challenges. The first night fishing, we tipped the canoe. Lost some of our fishing gear, swam for 20 minutes or so, and blamed no one but ourselves. The next morning the stove we had didn’t work perfectly and continued to not work perfectly for the entire trip, we built fires as we wanted to, and grew from figuring out what to do. The handle on our water filter snapped, we used a leatherman or boiled water or used aquamira. We learned from the challenge and grew from it. We also ate fresh blueberries and raspberries literally anytime we wanted. We fell standing dead trees and processed them into usable fire wood. We ate like kings whenever we wanted. We went to bed every night completely exhausted in the most satisfying way. And this is the punch line, to a man, if all three of us knew the trip would happen exactly the same way, we’d all leave tomorrow and do it all again! I couldn’t fathom flipping a canoe and losing meaningful gear, that would suck! We lashed everything to the canoes when we were traveling and had sealed dry bags inside all packs to aid in buoyancy in case, but We did have issues and we leaned into them and will remember the trip fondly forever especially because of how we reacted to the challenges.
